Young Voices of Macedon look towards another year of wonderful singing

Young Voices of Macedon can look back on 2024 as a busy and very rewarding year of choral singing. Highlights included a performance at Choralfest@Montsalvat, workshops and performances with the Bendigo Youth Choir and Yarra Voices (from Fitzroy), and the annual concert in Macedon at which the older children were especially privileged to perform Messe brève by 19th-century French composer Léo Delibes with the Bendigo Youth Choir, string ensemble and pipe organ. This work was also sung at the 40th anniversary concert of the Bendigo Youth Choir at the historic Capitol Theatre in Bendigo. To conclude the year the choir participated once again in the Service of Readings and Carols at the Church of the Resurrection, Macedon, when the children had the experience of singing with a substantial adult choir that included singers from the Australian Chamber Choir. The service commenced with our soloist Eliza Davis singing the first verse of the processional carol Once in royal David’s city in a program that embraced English, German and Australian carols (choral and congregational), including the very challenging Merrily did the shepherds blow by English composer Alan Bullard. Our young Vivo group excelled themselves with their singing of the first verse of Away in a manger, accompanied by Celtic harp, and The three drovers by Australian composer William James.

This year promises to be equally exciting. Rehearsals led by teachers Jess Demare and Emma West assist children in developing vocal technique, part singing skills and general musicianship, and to learn a wide range of repertoire: popular, classical, folk and music theatre within a culture of enjoyment and inclusion. Rehearsals commence at 4.15 pm with afternoon tea. Warm-ups for all follow at 4.30, after which the groups work separately on repertoire. Newcomers are welcome to try out a rehearsal on Thursdays from 4.15 to 6.00 pm at the House of the Rock, 247 Station Road, New Gisborne.
