About the choir

Young Voices of Macedon is a community children's choir that rehearses weekly in New Gisborne during school terms. Singers enjoy regular performance opportunities, including a major annual concert, community events, and collaborations with both children's and adult choirs.

Rehearsals are held on Thursdays from 4:15pm–5:45pm (arrival from 4:00pm) at The House of the Rock, 247 Station Road, New Gisborne, and are supported by online learning resources.

Choir structure

The choir offers two age-based programs:

Vivo (ages 6–10) focuses on developing pitch, vocal skills, and musicianship through the Kodály approach, incorporating musical games and action songs.

Cantabile (ages 11+) performs a wide-ranging repertoire including classical, folk, sacred, popular, and musical theatre works, with an emphasis on two- and three-part singing.

Rehearsals

Each rehearsal commences with warm-ups involving the entire choir and always including the singing of rounds or simple part songs. Thereafter, children rehearse in separate groups, the young children (Vivos) finishing at 5:00pm, when afternoon tea is served and time allowed for socialisation. Then Vivo children leave for home, and the older singers (Cantabiles) continue until 5:45pm.

Performances

The annual program includes Choralfest, community events, the choir's September concert, the Service of Readings and Carols, and the Gisborne Carols by Candlelight.

Young Voices of Macedon is proudly supported by the Gisborne Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, the Stoneman Foundation, and the Stokes Foundation.

Training

The choir takes on the responsibility of training interested senior choristers to develop leadership and conducting skills, having created the position of Assistant Conductor for one of our long-serving choristers.

The Young Voices Choir has helped children grow in both musical skills and confidence. It’s inspiring to be part of such a vibrant musical community.
